Prepare for ACMA Open Cabler Registration
ACMA Restricted Rule & ACMA Open Rule

The open cabler course is a great entry point for people wishing to work in the telecommunications industry. This course covers both the ACMA Open Rule and the ACMA Restricted Rule to give students the most updated Training available.

Upon successful completion of this course, individuals who have three hundred sixty (360) hours of authentic telecommunications cabling experience and meet the course prerequisites, will have constructed the skills and knowledge required to apply for an ACMA Open Cabler Registration.

*Please note, the Open Cabling Registration is issued by one of the five ACMA approved registrars and not JB Hunter. Further information on obtaining your Cabling Registration can be found here.

An Open Cabler Registration enables telecommunications workers to legally install and maintain telephone, security* and fire alarm cabling in all types of customer premises. This course replaces the old AUSTEL & BCL license courses. Technicians installing data, coaxial or fibre optic cable will also require the appropriate endorsement on their registration.

WHAT YOU NEED TO BRING to your Open Cabler Registration course

  • Proof of identity to show your instructor – this can be either a current driver’s licence, passport or company photo ID
  • Enclosed shoes or safety boots
  • Appropriate work attire – long sleeve shirt and pants
  • Safety glasses
  • An unmarked PRINTED COPY of ASCA S009:2020 Installation requirements for customer cabling (Wiring Rules). This can either be downloaded and printed for free by clicking here or you can purchase a copy from Standards Australia by phoning 1800 035 822

Course participants are required to read and bring to class an unmarked printed OR electronic copy of the Australian Standards Installation Requirements for Customer Cabling (Wiring Rules) AS/CA S009:2020. You can download the Standard here. If bringing an electronic version please ensure you download before attending your workshop.

*Please note that for work in the security industry a separate Security Licence may be required depending on the location (State/Territory) and type of work being conducted.

Prerequisites

The following units of competency MUST be completed or held prior to commencing your open registration course.

ICTWHS204 – Follow work health and safety and environmental policy and procedures
ICTTEN208 – Use electrical skills when working with telecommunications networks

Students who do not hold these units can complete them online with JB Hunter prior to attending your Open Registration course. This option is included in the cost of the course. If you successfully complete these units with JB Hunter, they will be included on your Statement of Attainment.

Alongside the mandated pre-requisite units, JB Hunter requires participants to complete an online learning module for ICTTEN202 – Use hand and power tools. All required online learning must be completed before attending the classroom based workshop and is included in the cost of the course.

The Open Registration course forms a pathway to obtaining the ACMA Open Cabler Registration. This Registration can be obtained from an ACMA approved registrar and is subject to meeting all the requirements of the ACMA, including three hundred and sixty (360) hours of cabling experience. For more information read: How to become a registered cabler
