What are the pre-requisites and cabling experience required before completing the Cabler Registration courses?
- Recognised OH&S training relevant to building cabling activities. Examples include State WorkCover/WorkSafe issued OH&S construction induction cards; OH&S subjects studied at TAFE as part of building or electrical trades.
- Students should have at least six months prior relevant building cabling experience, including the use of hand and power tools. Examples of relevant building cabling include installation of telecommunications, electronic, data, security or electrical cabling.
- Students should have a knowledge of fundamental DC principles. A free tutorial is available here.
You are able to attend the course without meeting the pre-requisites, but will be issued with a Letter of Attendance rather than a Certificate. If you do not meet the experience requirements, you may be assessed as 'Not Yet Competent' and will need to gain relevant experience as outlined above and re-assessed at a later date.

I have let my Austel licence lapse. What do I need to do to become re-licenced?
The previous Austel licensing system has now been replaced with the new Open Cabler Registration under the ACMA's Cabling Provider Rules.
If you have previously held an Austel Licence which is now expired, then you may be able to receive exemptions from some of the training required to reach the Open Cabler Registration qualification.
Please contact us to discuss your requirements, or to find out more about our Open Cabler Registration training.
What is an endorsement?
Endorsements relate to telecommunication competencies that are nationally endorsed under the Australian National Training Authority (ANTA) system. There will be a section on the Registrar's application form for your Cabler Registration where you can register other specialist endorsement competencies such as cat 5 cabling, optical fibre cabling, coaxial cable and underground and aerial cabling. To have these added to your Open Cabling Registration you will need to complete the Registrar's application form and attach copies of the certificates. Some of our courses that provide for endorsements to your Open Cabler Registration include:
- S - ADC Krone Master Installer - (ICTTC009D)
- F - ADC Krone Optical Fibre - (ICTTC010D)
- C - Coaxial Cabling - (ICTTC011D)
Am I entitled to receive a subsidised training fee?
Please see our Training Subsidies information pages.
What career opportunities would I have after completing telecommunications training?
You may find opportunities to work for the major telecommunication carriers, contractors/sub-contractors for the carriers, private companies in the industry whose main business focus is on voice/data installation and maintenance or security system installation and maintenance, large companies and government departments.
The particular areas you may work in are:
- External – work in the access network, such as optical fibre cable jointing, pit and pipe installation and maintenance.
- Internal – work in customer premises, such as installation of voice/data cable or security alarm systems.
- Design and specialist areas.
How do I get a security licence?
The requirements differ for each state or territory. Please refer to the ASIAL website for more information by state/territory.
